History writing and document collecting become increasingly important to samurai in the Edo period, especially from the eighteenth century. One particularly strong focus of their studies is the Warring States and Unification era. This paper will look at the activities of such samurai historians in the domain of Tosa, with a particular interest in understanding how this activity is part of making a military identity for peacetime samurai by discovering and writing their “roots” in historic warfare.
